The other day I was flipping through channels on TV and I came across an evangelist on TV named
Max Lucado. Normally I don’t spend more than 2 minutes on any single channel other than FOX News,
but this guy was completely captivating so I listened to him for awhile. He had a good message,
so I thought I’d pass along the highlights of it here. He basically talked in 3 separate sections, then the
fourth section tied it all together:
1. The Sweet Spot – He started talking about the sweet spot in sports which immediately grabbed my
attention. He asked everyone what happens when you miss the sweet spot on a baseball bat or tennis
racquet. Answers were that you get all kinds of vibration going in every direction, it hurts your hands, the
ball doesn’t fly far or straight, and it involves a lot of wasted energy to get the ball to move. But
when you hit the sweet spot….no pain, no unnecessary vibration, no wasted energy, the ball flies long
and far. Then he concluded with a great quote saying:
“Our Maker has created all of us with a sweet spot”,
and he proceeded to talk about how we can all live in our “sweet spot”.
2. This section was centered around people’s uniquesness and how God can use it. He repeated the
a quote here many times that I really like:
“Use your uniqueness
To make a big deal out of God
Every day of your life”
3. This section was about identifying your unique tools God has given you, and identifying others
by the tools they show. He had a great story about when he was a teenager and got a job on a
construction site. He looked at the audience and said:
“I’m going to describe my tools to you, and you see if you can guess what my job was.”
“My tools consisted of an empty nail belt around my waist…..and a magnet.”
Everyone laughed because it was quite obvious what his job was. His point was that we have tools
given to us by God for a specific purpose.
4. In this section, he tied it all together. He started by giving some stats in general about
percentages of Americans who are not satisfied with their jobs, and surveys about how many
people do not feel they are doing the best they can with their abilities. Then he related it to a
Christian’s life by saying God doesn’t want you to be stuck in a task that is not suited to the tools
He has given you, and that He has given you specific tools with specific jobs in mind that are suited
to those tools. The Christian enjoys success at his task when he uses his God given tools for the right
task, and gains satifaction when he trusts God to give him the tasks and guide him through them. Then
Max crossed his fingers and said:
“The Sweet Spot is the intersection of success and satisfaction.”
Has anyone else ever heard of this Max Lucado? I’d never heard of this guy before, but I actually
enjoyed listening to him. Apparently he’s written several books and has a website which I didn’t
get to write down.
The part I’ve been really struggling with right now is figuring out what in the world God gave me to make
me unique. I look at myself and don’t see anything. Last night I asked Him if He would identify my
unique gift to me, and I got an answer but it wasn’t the one I was expecting. I think the answer I got was:
“You don’t need to know right now, just walk by faith into the task that I lead you into, and that will be the
task suited to your gift. Then you’ll know your gift.”
I hope I’m not misspeaking His answer, but that was the first thing that popped into my head after I asked
God the question.
Aim for sweet spot.
